The Thang-ka represents the goddess Avalokitesvara, the embodiment of compassion and wisdom. His thousand arms are a great help in fighting evil, as his thousand eyes allow him to see everything. In Indian Buddhism, she is associated with a woman called Tara. In China, she is worshiped as Guanyin or Kuan Yin, the two male and female identities of the Bodhisattva. She wears several faces, a sign of deep humility, each one being able to recognize in one or the other face the representation which it is made of the goddess. The multiplicity of his eyes allows him to see the misfortunes of everyone, and, his 20 pairs of arms, to come to the aid of the greatest number.
