Metlicovitz was born in the Adriatic port city of Trieste and appears to have become a painter and portraitist without any formal training. In 1891 he reported to the Ricordi printing house in Milan as a lithographic trainee, and after a year he was promoted to technical director.

Metlicovitz created numerous posters for the cosmetics company Sauzé Frères. The promotion of the perfume Flouvella featured a woman covered in a light veil that revealed her curves. Other posters for Sauzé perfumes include Fleur de Mousse and Liane Fleurie.

More recent than the Guerlain house, the Sauzé brothers' perfume factory was established on Rue Ménelotte in Colombes (Hauts de Seine) in 1913. For fifty years, they produced luxury perfumes and colognes there. They were the first French perfumers to create artistic posters for perfumery.
