Additional information:
Albert Brenet (1903-2005) was a French illustrator, poster artist and painter, famous for his works related to travel and transport. He became official painter of the Navy in 1936, then of the Air and the Armed Forces, which led him to travel aboard ships and planes to capture the lives of crews and the beauty of distant landscapes. Brenet is also known for his tourism promotion posters and is distinguished by his vibrant use of colors and his detailed scenes of daily life, maritime and military.
Compagnie des Chargeurs Réunis was founded in 1872 in Le Havre, France, and became a major player in the steamship shipping industry. Initially, it focused on routes between France, West Africa, and later, Latin America, as well as New York. In the 1950s, it expanded its services to include tourist travel, contributing to the rise of cruise tourism.
This poster for the Compagnie maritime des Chargeurs Réunis, created around 1950 by Albert Brenet, promotes tourism in France, illustrating Paris and its emblematic Café de la Paix, opposite the Opéra Garnier. Elegant Parisian women stroll along the Boulevard des Capucines, accompanied by their dogs and looking for treasures in the boutiques.
