Additional information:
Charles-Jean Hallo (1882-1969), known as ALO, was a painter, draftsman, illustrator, engraver, and photographer. Specializing in depicting tourist landscapes and hunting scenes (animals), he also distinguished himself in aviation, producing advertising gouaches of airplanes published in L'Aérophile.
Elegant tourist poster published by the Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée Railway (PLM) around 1920, illustrated by the artist Alo. It highlights one of the wonders of Romanesque art: the Basilica of Vézelay, located in Burgundy and dating from the XNUMXth century.
Designed to promote car excursions around Avallon, this poster combines art and heritage. The artist adopts an original perspective by depicting the basilica's open door, inviting the eye to step inside. Not only does it showcase the Romanesque architecture, but it also showcases the sculpted tympanum above the central portal, depicting Christ in Majesty, an iconographic masterpiece of the period.
Through this poster, the artist captures the spirit of cultural tourism in the 1920s, combining heritage discovery, spiritual quest and modernity.
