Portrait of a Court Lady
Oil on canvas: 44 x 35 cm without frame and 54 x 45 cm
Important Louis XIV period frame in gilded and carved wood
Depicted in three-quarters as Diana the Huntress, this elegant Lady of the Court is dressed in a veil blouse whose sleeves are held up by ribbons trimmed with a stone, she wears a red satin dress embroidered with white pearls and a royal blue coat. Surrounded by a crescent moon placed on the front of her hair.
Our painting is highlighted in a frame of XVIIth century in carved and gilded wood.
Born into a family of painters from Toulouse, François de TROY studied in Paris under Nicolas Loir and Claude Lefèvre. He excelled in portraiture and also history painting. In 1694, he was admitted to the Royal Academy. He became the Court painter of King Jacques II in exile in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in collaboration with his student Alexis Simon Belle.
For more than fifty years he was the court painter in France and abroad.
