BERTIN Roger

Faithful to the Butte that he has never left, he has had his studio in the new Bateau-Lavoir since 1982. Max Jacob, his godfather, gives him his first drawing lessons; Bertin was six years old when the poet left the Butte to retire to Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire. He received a few watercolor lessons from Lucien Dupré. In 1934, he entered the Académie Jean de Botton, then the Académie Frochot, in 1935. Member of the Salon d'Automne in 1937. Exhibition in New York at the Demotte gallery, and in Paris at the Charpentier gallery, in 1939. In 1946, he visits Algeria and Morocco and exhibits there, as well as in 1947 & 1948; trips to black Africa (1950), then to the Far East (1951).

A prolific artist, Bertin paints Montmartre in both oil and watercolor; he is also known landscapes, snows, interiors, still lifes, and for a time he had a predilection for stations, in particular that of Saint-Lazare. Bertin exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1941, at Comparaisons, and at Galliera (Painters Witnesses of their Time), at the Salon des Indépendants of which he was a member, at the National Fine Arts.
