A Chinese scholar's cabinet, known as a "shugui," dating from the late 19th century. The wood is finished in a deep black lacquer, revealing a red patina in places. Inside, there is a large, open space with two dovetailed drawers. In terms of craftsmanship, the cabinetmaker's butterflies hold the wood together, preventing cracks in the lacquer. There are very minor marks across the grain, but overall it is in superb condition.
The design of the scholar's study depicts a restrained elegance whose symbolism represents the aesthetics of emptiness. These are among the most representative pieces of Chinese furniture.
