CHARRETON Victor, Léon, Jean-Pierre, Born in 1864 in Bourgoin (Isère) / Died in 1936 in Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dome)
Painter of landscapes, flowers, gouache painter, pastellist, Post-Impressionist.
Victor CHARRETON studied law and was admitted to the Lyon Court of Appeal. He practices painting as an amateur since his childhood and studies at Hareux and Japy in Lyon. But in 1902, Victor CHARRETON gave up his legal career to devote himself entirely to painting, and moved to Paris, while joining, in the summer, his house, near Clermont-Ferrand. He also travels a lot: Corsica, Algeria, Spain, England, Belgium, Holland, Germany. Victor CHARRETON led a life of esthete and man of culture, lover of poetry and music. He was a landscape painter in the Lyon tradition, with a taste for sensual pigment impasto, seeking momentary, instantaneous effects which had captured the impressionists - In addition to his native Dauphiné and the Auvergne by adoption, Victor CHARRETON was also sensitive to charms of Ile-de-France, Paris (Montmartre, Jardin du Luxembourg, Parc Montsouris), Provence, Creuse, Brittany. he looked for intimate aspects with the blaze of autumn landscapes, and particularly the effects of snow, - the snow that evens out everything, being an ideal starting point to magnify nature. After painting twilight, backlighting in half-tones, misty sunsets, Victor CHARRETON gave more and more importance to light and color. It was located exactly at the crossroads of the century of finishing Impressionism and the century of upheavals begun by Fauvism.Victor CHARRETON exhibited at the Salons in Paris and Lyon, in several provincial towns and abroad: New York, Geneva, Barcelona and obtained numerous awards.Victor CHARRETON was founder of Salon d'Automne and secretary general. He was knighted in the Legion of Honor.
