The original was painted by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun in 1785 and the work is kept at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse under the inventory number RO307.
Baroness Henri Charles Emmanuel de Crussol Florensac, born Bonne Marie Joséphine Gabrielle Bernard de Boulainvilliers, is here portrayed half body, from behind, her face turned towards the viewer, and she is holding a score where, with great attention to detail, Elizabeth-Louise Vigée-Lebrun has reproduced the text and notes of an opera by Gluck: Echo et Narcisse, performed in Paris in 1797. There are many references to the Queen in this painting: the fichu "à la Marie-Antoinette" , which lights up the Baroness' face, and the fact that Glück was the Queen's favorite musician, are just a few examples. The craftsmanship of the garment, in red silk lined with black fur, of the lace of the sleeve and of the white neckerchief, testifies to a perfect mastery of the play of light and shadow, which brings out all the richness of the toilet.
