Elegant and highly functional English Davenport or naval desk, William IV period, circa 1830.
This type of writing desk was created for Captain Davenport in the late 18th century to store his documents in a small space. The slightly inclined work surface lifts up to reveal a compartmentalized elm burl interior with a secret drawer. This writing desk moves back and forth to provide space for your knees. A shelf on the left holds a cup of tea, and a pen tray on the right holds ink and quill, all the sophistication of English furniture.
The quality of this piece of furniture points us towards the great English cabinetmaker “Gillows of Lancaster”.
