Tony DE BERGE ( Tony François de Berge ), 1820 / 1893, ( French ).
Marine painter, lithographer and engraver.
He received his artistic training at the Royal School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Léon Cogniet. It was with this master that he developed his love of marine subjects. In Nicolas Gosse's class, he practiced genre painting and historical painting.
He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1847, then in 1861. His travels in the south of France, Spain and Portugal enabled him to bring back many scenes of ports and Mediterranean and Manchoise shores. His touch, precise and meticulous in the works of his youth, widens and becomes free over the years. He is more and more interested in the effects of light, and if he continues to faithfully restore the rigging of the ships he paints, his treatment of sailors, sea waters and shores is flexible and rapid.
Museums: Paris, Reims, Barnsley.
