Magnificent large pair of Empire style candelabra with four light arms in chiseled and gilded bronze, a fifth bobèche carried by a sphinx sits in the center of this luminous bouquet supported by a winged Victory in bronze with brown patina. Circa 1890
This Victory rests on a cylindrical base in red griotte marble decorated with garlands and mascarons in golden broner.
This model of candelabra was created by the famous bronze-caster Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843). Pierre-Philippe Thomire was a French sculptor, who became the most important producer of patinated and gilded bronze ornamental objects and furniture mounts during the First French Empire. Although trained as a sculptor, Thomire decided to follow his father into the bronze-casting trade. He had received his training in the workshop of Pierre Gouthière, a famous Parisian chaser-gilder, before creating his own workshop in 1776.
