Thibule Marie Furcy de Lavault
Oil on canvas Signed upper right
Dimensions: 80 x 61cm without frame
A magnificent bouquet of irises and a scattering of lilacs. The palette is harmonious, with shades of mauve and pink. The touch is bold and lively, enveloped in a beautiful luminosity.
Thibule Marie Furcy de Lavault learned to draw at the Saintes college at the age of 17. Suffering from lead poisoning, he turned to easel painting after being introduced by Savarin, a Bordeaux painter.
He began his career as a portrait painter and then specialized as a flower painter.
In 1870 he began exhibiting in Bordeaux, mainly landscapes and some still lifes. In the 1880s he became a virtuoso of flower painting.
An excellent draftsman, his canvases are delicate, rich in texture and color. He participated in the Paris Salon and in many French regions.
He won two gold medals in 1882 and was appointed curator of the La Rochelle museum.
Museums: La Rochelle, Rochefort, Pau, Poitier, Cognac
