Here are some free-range chickens pecking among flowers, a subject executed with vivacity and color. Hélène RIVIERE was born in 1896 in Toulouse. Daughter of the sculptor Jean Rivière, professor at the Toulouse School of Fine Arts, she exhibited at a very young age from 1920 through the Société des artistes Méridionaux. Then from 1926 to 1940, she exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and won a gold medal in 1935. In 1937, she received the Rosa-Bonheur prize. Goddaughter of the painter Henri Martin, she began painting landscapes and then specialized in painting flowers and farmyards. She also taught drawing at the Toulouse School of Fine Arts.
