This magnificent oil on canvas is a work of the great Polish painter Szymon (Simeon) Buchbinder.

Simeon or Szymon Buchbinder was born in 1853 in Radzyn Podlaski and died in 1908 in Berlin. Most of his work depicts genre or historical scenes and small portraits.

It was his older brother who introduced him to drawing and gave him his first drawing lessons. Quickly, his taste for drawing and therefore painting is felt and pushes him to study within this branch.

From 1869 to 1871, he studied at the “Warsaw School of Drawing” where he learned from two great painters, Wojciech Gerson and Rafal Hadziewicz.

At the end of his studies, he obtained a job as a designer at the Vienna Opera and then joined, two years later, the “Vienna Academy of Fine Arts” under the direction of Eduard Von Engerth.

His work took on a new dimension in 1897, when he arrived in Berlin. It was then who concentrated solely on painting portraits; this is what makes us think that the painted woman is a young Berlin woman.

The work done on this oil is of very high quality. Indeed, this work is typical of Simeon Buchbinder; the light is subtle and the background black in order to highlight the subject and more particularly his face.

The oil has a signature “S. Buchbinder ”and a date which appears to be“ 1901 ”.

The supervision is also of high quality.

This frame in wood and gilded stucco presents a rich floral decoration and has a beautiful original fine gold gilding. In addition, he has a framer's stamp located in Berlin.
