JBC ODIOT – Covered silver sugar bowl, 1st Empire period, 1809/1818
Elegant covered sugar bowl in ovoid shape in solid silver, resting on a circular pedestal, with domed lid decorated with a stylized seed handle. The side handles, finely chiseled with palmettes and rosettes on an matte background, testify to a decorative repertoire typical of the neo-Pompeian taste under the Empire. Piece executed entirely by hammer. The guarantee mark with the 2nd cock attests to a manufacture between 1809 and 1818.
This work is by Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, one of the most prestigious Parisian goldsmiths of the First Empire, a renowned supplier to the Imperial Court and many European courts. He succeeded his father and promoted French goldsmithing through creations combining architectural rigor and ornamental richness, often inspired by Antiquity.
