This scientific and military exploration mission carried out between 1898 and 1900 across the Sahara and towards French Sudan had a considerable impact: on a scientific level it gave knowledge of the great desert a decisive boost; on the political level, it washed away the affront of the Flatters mission and completed the conquest of Chad after the victory of Kousseri against Rabah.
