Exceptional enamelled stoneware dish decorated with a stylized bird, signed and dated A Kostanda, Vallauris 1962.
France (1921-2006) Alexandre Kostanda did his apprenticeship with Louis Giraud in Vallauris in 1936. He then taught ceramics in Biot then in Côte d'Or where he was the teacher of the four founders of the Accolay workshops. In 1949, he returned to Vallauris to take charge of Louis Giraud's workshop. Kostanda founded his own workshop in 1953. He brought sandstone clay from Cluny, which withstands higher firing temperatures, and mixed it with the earth of Vallauris. Its production, sensual and plastic at its beginnings, evolves towards more purity. Alexandre Kostanda maintains a predilection for muted colors, close to the natural shades of clay.
