The Hare, Vienna Bronze

Bronze proof with polychrome patina (bronze patinated and cold painted), “Bronze De Vienne”, depicting a standing hare.
Cold-painted bronzes are pieces cast in Vienna and decorated in several layers with so-called "dust" paint, the know-how of which has been lost.
The color was not baked, hence the expression "cold painted", a typical cottage industry.
The latter, often humanized or fanciful, are humorous art objects.
Each piece, unique in its hand-carving, is further individualized by the colors applied to it.
This attention to detail makes Viennese production the most naturalistic of its time, as well as the one offering the widest choice of subjects.
