GUSTAVE MADELAIN (French, 1867-1944)
Born in Charly, this French impressionist painter studied in Paris and from 1907 successfully exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants where he received numerous awards for his landscapes and views of the city. Madelain became particularly associated with the scenes of Montmartre and the left bank of the Seine, often with monumental architectural subjects represented in the evening and observed with a subtle palette full of tones. Madelain's retrospective (Paris, 1926) was a great success with six architectural works purchased by the French government. A delicately painted view from a highly regarded Parisian perspective illustrates the style of this predominantly Parisian artist.
