The Memphis collective was created in Milan on December 11, 1980 on the initiative of the architect Ettore Sottsass. Bringing together some eight designers and architects, it began designing furniture with an innovative design, which quickly became an icon of the 1980s. Mixing both geometric and kitsch shapes with plastic reproducing noble materials, the group shook up conventions and obtained worldwide recognition from the opening of its Milan showroom on September 19, 1981. In addition to the 55 original objects, each year until 1987, a collection produced by the publisher Artemide was added. While its founder left the adventure in 1985, Memphis exhibited for the last time in 1988. The Memphis experience was extended by other groups such as Meta Memphis from 1989 to 1991, or even Post Design, founded in 1997. The company continues to exist and reissue objects from this period.
