Danish designer Henning Koppel (Copenhagen 1918–1981) first studied drawing and then sculpture with Anker Hoffmann at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. He began designing gold and silver in exile in Sweden during World War II at Orrefors and Svenskt Tenn. He returned to Copenhagen in 1945 and worked with goldsmith Georg Jensen until his death in 1981. His designs, called “New Look,” had a completely new creative conception. Moving away from the decorative elements of Art Nouveau and the geometry of the Art Deco era, his works feature sober surfaces with a slightly asymmetrical and organic-looking basic form. His works were awarded gold medals at the Milan Triennale in 1951, 1954 and 1957.
