Paul-Elie DUBOIS was part of the official mission sent to Hoggar in 1928. It was the first time that a painter traveled to this mysterious region. He brought back a quantity of paintings, drawings, sketches and decorative documents. “By its illustration as well as its execution, the work ranks among the most remarkable of contemporary production. Some copies under subscription are paid up to fifty thousand francs... The artist, curious about the realities of the Tuareg country, the psychology of its inhabitants, translates them with intelligence. It is amazing that over time and circumstances, he represents the princesses of the Amenokal family, “beautiful and laughing Targuia”, he admits…. Paul Elie Dubois, after having lived in this country, offered it to the civilized world through art, “the most beautiful and effective colonial propaganda, observes the press” (Elisabeth Cazenave, Paul-Elie Dubois painter of Hoggar)
