A native of Utrecht, Jan Both (1615 – 1652) introduced the style of Claude Lorrain to the Dutch landscape. His Italianate style was later developed by artists such as Nicolaes Berchem and Aelbert Cuyp. The British Museum holds a drawing by Jan Both that is stylistically close to the present drawing (see inv. no. Gg.2.268 – Landscape with a Shepherd and his Flock, pen and brown ink, brown wash, 252 x 352 mm).
