Émile – Louis Truffot (1843-1896)

Émile – Louis Truffot is a famous French sculptor , born in Valenciennes, July 26, 1843.

Student of “Francisque Duret”, “Bonnassieux” and “Cavalier” at the Paris School of Fine Arts , he exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1863 .
He receives a Silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 .

Émile-Louis Truffot sculpted, the young shepherd “Jean-Baptiste Jupille” who entered the History of France and that of medicine.
Attacked by a rabid dog, he was the first to receive several injections rabies , by Louis Pasteur, which saved his life .
Thus, faced with the irrefutability of the effects of the anti-rabies vaccine, Louis Pasteur made his incredible discovery official at the Academy of Sciences.
A commemorative bronze sculpture is present under the vault of the mortuary crypt of Louis Pasteur , and also represented, on the obverse of the five franc note, issued on May 5, 1966 by the Bank of France, and in circulation until 1972.
We also owe him the monument adorning the facades of the Paris City Hall , of Count Louis – Antoine de Bougainville , explorer and naval officer, who led as Captain, from 1766 to 1769, the first circumnavigation of the world, sponsored by the French government.

He is buried in Paris at the Père-Lachaise Cemetery (15e division).
