Clovis – Edmond Masson (1838-1913)

Clovis – Edmond Masson, is a famous French animal sculptor, born in Paris on March 7, 1838.

A student of the sculptors "Antoine-Louis Barye" and "Pierre-Louis Rouillard", Clovis Masson regularly exhibited his animal sculptures at the Salon from 1867 to 1909.
Its very rich bestiary includes big cats as well as deer and roe deer.
His bronzes are characterized by their elegance.
From 1867 onwards, with his plaster cast "The Hunt for Indian Tigers", he specialized in animal representation; his work was playful and inventive, with a certain license from his mentor, Antoine-Louis Barye.
Subsequently, C. Masson regularly participated in the Salon, producing more than fifty works up to 1909.
In 1890, he was awarded an "Honorable Mention".

In parallel, the sculptor produced several monumental works, both in France and abroad.
He notably worked with the sculptor "Georges Ernest Saulo" for the "Equestrian Portrait of the King of Siam" which still adorns the "Ananta Samakhom Palace Square" in Bangkok today.

Clovis-Edmond Masson died in Villevaudé on September 10, 1913.
Considered an important artist of animal sculpture, he leaves behind a unique artistic repertoire, in which bronze works occupy a prominent place.
His son "Jules-Edmond Masson" also became a sculptor and studied with his father.
The city of Nîmes has several sculptures by the artist in its Museum.
