Rare bust in white Carrara marble, depicting the “Laughing Neapolitan Woman” after the sculptor Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827-1875).
This is a portrait of Anna Foucart, eldest daughter of Jean-Baptiste Foucart, a close friend of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.
The sculptor painted the portrait of the young girl in 1860 and reused this model several times, adapting it into “Rieuse Napolitaine” in 1863, then into “Rieuse aux roses” in 1872.
Here the emphasis is placed on the traditional Neapolitan costume to match the bust of the “Laughing Neapolitan” which is one of the greatest successes of the sculptor from Valenciennes.
Marble titled in a cartouche “RIEUSE DE CARPEAUX” on the front of the bust.
Signature of the sculptor “JB-CARPEAUX” on the side of the bust.
Old edition sculpture, second part of the period XIXth century.
Very good state of preservation.
