Bronze sculpture with brown patina, depicting a standing sheep, named "Vosges Sheep", by the sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879).
The “Mouton des Vosges Debout” is one of the two sculptures sent by the sculptor to the Salon of 1865.
It represents a return of the artist to the “Pastures” series.
The oldest proofs are dated “1864”, the year the work was created.
The sculptor's signature "PJMÊNE", followed by the date "1864", is incised on the richly chiseled naturalistic terrace, enriched with a profile.
Rare old edition sculpture, period second part of the XIX th century.
Perfect state of conservation.

Pierre-Jules Mêne, produced numerous animal sculptures, particularly popular during the Second Empire, like Antoine – Louis Barye, Auguste Caïn, Pierre Louis Rouillard and later, François Pompon.
PJ Mêne specialized in small bronzes, and did not produce work for public statuary.
His animal subjects have enjoyed great popular success.
