Georges STEIN (pseudonym of Séverin Louis Stein), 1864 / 1917 (French, origin
Luxembourgish)
Urban landscape painter, watercolorist, designer and illustrator, he is best known and recognized for his works representing Paris and its streets, boulevards, squares during the Belle Epoque. He is a student of Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. Under the influence of Jean Béraud, he works in particular on the treatment of light to translate the hustle and bustle of Parisian life: his works are imbued with spontaneity, dynamism and movement, thus giving spectators the sensation of participating in the observed scenes and the activities offered to the urban public of the Belle Epoque. He also painted views of London, Melun, Vichy, and in Switzerland where he spent his last years, of Geneva, Lausanne and Bern. He was a member of the Society of French Artists and exhibited at the Salon from 1912 to 1914. He also produced large decorative panels, notably a series of works decorating the casino in the town of Vichy.
Museums: Paris, Melun.
