Painter of urban landscapes and watercolourist, Stein sketched sites of Paris and London with a talent of great spontaneity. This chronicler and illustrator was able to accurately describe the thousand aspects of Parisian life at the end of the XIXth century. Georges Stein knows how to perfectly transcribe the atmosphere, the elegance and the gaiety of the Belle Epoque.
He regularly exhibits his works at the Paris Salon on the Champs-Elysées. He also made large decorative panels, including a series of works adorning the casino in the city of Vichy.
A painter of Parisian city life, he also turned his interest to the hustle and bustle of other cities, including Bern, Monte Carlo and London, of which he left us a few views. But it was above all the famous squares of Paris that held his attention throughout his career: La Madeleine, the Ile de la Cité, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Opera and the Moulin Rouge. His emblematic views are a true testimony to the customs and leisure activities of the Parisian public.
Greatly influenced by the Parisian views of Jean Beraud, Georges Stein, with a rapid style, emphasizes in this painting the muted luminosity of a stormy afternoon. He accentuates the effect of movement by the position of the women who pass each other in the street, one wearing a hat and umbrella. His spirited scenes give the spectators the impression of having participated in the animation and agitation of the streets.
