Tapestry fragment from the continuation of the story of Odysseus.
In wool and silk, the tapestry was executed in the workshop of
Amiens factory and was probably woven in the first
third of the XVIIth century.
France.
XVIIth century.
The subject of this tapestry is mainly centered on the
events related to the meeting of the hero and the magician. The artist
referred partly to the text of Homer's Odyssey and partly to
that of Ovid's metamorphoses.
Circe touches Odysseus with her magic wand so that he becomes
pig as his companions have become (two pigs on the first
plan). Thanks to the counterpoison supplied by Hermès, the magic did not
of effect.
Circe, having been unable to achieve her ends, will grant Odysseus a walk
sentimental in its gardens. They will be followed by the god of love.
