- 4 volumes in-4, the first two full navy blue long-grain morocco (rel. of CREUZEVAULT, with his golden signature), covers decorated with a large frame of 16 gilt fillets, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets and gilt titles , quadruple gilt fillet framing the contreplats, navy blue moiré silk guards, cover. and spine preserved, gilded edges, in lined cases; the 3rd volume half navy blue morocco, marbled paper on the boards and endpapers, decorated ribbed spine, gilded head; the last in ff. navy half morocco wallet and case. Unique copy of a limited edition of 238. This copy on Japanese paper contains all the original drawings, proofs, artist's proofs, counter-proofs and proofs monogrammed or signed by Chahine as well as all the plates – including rejected boards – in three states: first state, second state with comments and final final state. Each of the 4 volumes is of exceptional interest: the volume of text itself, in its binding signed by Creuzevault, is complete with engravings, including the refused ones in three states bound in fine; the second volume, in a uniform binding also signed by Creuzevault, includes an autograph letter signed by Flaubert on his work and all of Chahine's preparatory drawings and sketches for this work (all signed by the artist), as well as a drawing on silk ; the third volume brings together the plates in three states including the counter-proofs; finally the last volume brings together the suites, still in three states.
