Bronze with nuanced brown patina. 
The Jester is dressed in his traditional costume, he is accompanied by a costumed learned monkey, and a hound wearing a large feather necklace. 
A marotte wearing a hood with bells, serving as an attribute of the court jesters, holds a cartouche titled “Are they Gentis”. 
Signature of the sculptor “A. BARYE", in hollow, on the naturalistic terrace, richly decorated.
Old edition bronze, second part of the period XIX th century. 
Perfect state of conservation and patina.

Alfred Barye (1839-1895)

Alfred Barye, renowned French sculptor, known as "the Son", or "Alf Barye", born in Paris, January 21, 1839.

Alfred Barye was a pupil of his father, the sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875).
He trained and worked in his father's workshop and foundry. 
His work includes animal bronzes as well as orientalist and comic subjects.
He exhibited at the Salon from 1864 to 1882.

The works of Alfred Barye show a very high degree of detail, execution and finishing, equal to the works of his father. 
He died on May 13, 1895, in Paris.
