Important et majestueux groupe en bronze , à double patines , brune et or , figurant la célèbre poétesse Clotilde de Surville , portant dans ses bras son enfant , par le sculpteur Jean Gautherin (1840-1890) .
À travers , cette œuvre , une allégorie de la « Maternité », le sculpteur met en évidence la douceur des liens maternels , de l’amour infini et inconditionnel .
La mère porte un regard tendre sur son bébé , qu’elle tient contre elle , dans un geste tendre et protecteur .
Une scène intimiste et pleine de douceur , illustrant le poème de Clotilde de Surville (1405-1498) »Verselets à mon premier-né ».
On peut lire sur le cartouche en bronze , situé au centre de la terrasse , le premier verset de ce poème :

Ô cher enfant, véritable punition de ton père ,
Dors sur le seyn que ta bouche a pressé !
Dors, petit ; cloz, amy, sur le seyn de ta mère,

Important and majestic bronze group , with double patina , brown and gold , depicting the famous poet Clotilde de Surville , carrying her child in her arms , by the sculptor Jean Gautherin (1840-1890) .
Through this work , an allegory of « Motherhood », the sculptor highlights the sweetness of maternal bonds , of infinite and unconditional love .
The mother looks tenderly at her baby , whom she holds against her , in a tender and protective gesture .
An intimate scene full of sweetness , illustrating the poem by Clotilde de Surville (1405-1498) « Verselets to my first-born ».
We can read on the bronze cartouche , located in the center of the terrace , the first verse of this poem :
« SURVILLE CLOTHILDE
O dear child , true punishment of your father ,
Sleep on the breast that your mouth has pressed !

Jean Gautherin (1840-1890)
Jean Gautherin est un sculpteur et peintre français , né le 19 décembre 1840 , à Ouroux-en-Morvan .
Il commence son apprentissage dans l’Atelier de Charles Gumery , où il sera un temps praticien .
Par la suite , il rejoint l’Atelier d’Auguste Dumont .
Il entre à l’Ecole des Beaux-arts en 1864 , et suit l’enseignement des sculpteurs Charles Gumery , Augustin Dumont et Paul Dubois.
Il débute au Salon de 1865 , où il obtient une médaille en 1868 et 1870 , et une médaille de troisième classe en 1873 .
En 1878 et 1889 , il reçoit une Médaille d’Or à l’Exposition Universelle .
En 1885 , il effectue un séjour de plusieurs semaines à Copenhague , le collectionneur et mécène « Carl Jacobsen » le mandate à fin de sculpter un portrait de la « Princesse Dagmar », future tsarine Maria Feodorovna[a].
Un important fonds de ses œuvres est conservé à Copenhague à la Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek , fondée par Jacobsen .
Jean Gautherin a toujours produit beaucoup de portraits .
En 1876 , il se remit à composer de grandes figures et des groupes donnant successivement son « Saint – Sébastien » en marbre , et « Clotilde de Surville ».
En 1881 , il est élu membre du « Comité de Sculpture » du « Comité des Quatre-Vingt-Dix Artistes Français » : peintres , sculpteurs , graveurs , architectes , chargés de rédiger les statuts de la Société des Artistes Français .
Ses oeuvres les plus célèbres sont :
Clotilde de Surville, symbole de maternité .
Le groupe du «Paradis Perdu», au palais des Champs-Elysées .
Les statues de Diderot , sur la place de Saint-Germain-des-Prés .
Le Travail , Jardins du Luxembourg .
De l’Industrie et du Commerce , au Trocadéro .
Il modèle pour la maison Christofle les motifs des Saisons .
On retrouve aussi ses oeuvres à Copenhague , avec la statue de l’Impératrice de Russie , Maria Féodorowna , veuve d’Alexandre III .
Il meurt à l’aube de la cinquantaine , au sommet de son talent , Le 21 juillet 1890 , il sera inhumé à Paris au cimetière du Montparnasse .

Jean Gautherin is a French sculptor and painter , born on December 19 , 1840 , in Ouroux-en-Morvan .
He began his apprenticeship in the workshop of Charles Gumery , where he was a practitioner for a time .
Subsequently , he joined the workshop of Auguste Dumont .
He entered the School of Fine – Arts in 1864 , and followed the teaching of the sculptors Charles Gumery , Augustin Dumont and Paul Dubois .
He made his debut at the Salon of 1865 , where he obtained a medal in 1868 and 1870 , and a third-class medal in 1873 .
In 1878 and 1889 , he received a Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition .
In 1885 , he spent several weeks in Copenhagen , where the collector and patron « Carl Jacobsen » commissioned him to sculpt a portrait of « Princess Dagmar », the future Tsarina Maria Feodorovna[a] .
A large collection of his works is preserved in Copenhagen at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek , founded by Jacobsen .
Jean Gautherin always produced many portraits .
In 1876 , he returned to composing large figures and groups , giving successively his « Saint Sebastian » in marble , and « Clotilde de Surville » .
In 1881 , he was elected member of the « Sculpture Committee » of the « Committee of Ninety French Artists » : painters , sculptors , engravers , architects , responsible for drafting the statutes of the Society of French Artists .
