Sculpture – Saint-Michel Terrassant Le Dragon , Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) – Bronze

Épreuve en bronze à patine brune , représentant l’Archange Saint-Michel , terrassant un démon réptilien , le dragon par le sculpteur Emmanuel Frémiet .
Saint – Michel figure debout , il repose sur un chapiteau octogonal , auquel s’aggrippe un dragon aux ailes de chauve-souris .
L’ Archange menaçe de son épée le dragon incarnant le mal .
Cette sculpture est conforme à l’oeuvre monumentale de quatre mètres de hauteur hissée sur la flèche du Mont-Saint-Michel .
La statue se distingue dans la production d’ Emmanuel Frémiet par le dynamisme de sa silhouette .
Au Salon de 1879 , Emmanuel Frémiet expose un « Saint Michel » en bronze exécuté par l’éditeur Charles More , l’archange terrasse un serpent à tête d’homme .
En 1896 , l’architecte « Petitgrand », qui dirige le chantier de restauration du Mont-Saint-Michel , demande au sculpteur Emmanuel Frémiet de réaliser un agrandissement de son œuvre , sans doute selon ses directives , le sculpteur modifie le socle pour l’adapter à l’architecture et transforme le démon .
Notre sculpture est une édition de la seconde partie du XIXème siècle , « Charles More Fondeur » , portant la numérotation « 501 » , circa 1890 .
Bronze signé « E.FREMIET » , en creux sur la terrasse .
Sculpture reposant sur une terrasse ovale en marbre rouge griotte (lègere restauration d’un petit éclat) .
Parfait état de conservation et de patine .

Saint-Michel is standing , he rests on an octagonal capital , to which a dragon with bat wings clings .
The Archangel threatens the dragon embodying evil with his sword .
This sculpture is consistent with the monumental work of four meters in height hoisted on the spire of Mont-Saint-Michel .
At the Salon of 1879 , Emmanuel Fremiet exhibited a bronze « Saint Michel » executed by the publisher Charles More , the archangel defeats a serpent with a man’s head .
In 1896 , the architect « Petitgrand » , who directed the restoration work of Mont-Saint-Michel , asked the sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet to enlarge his work , probably according to his instructions , the sculptor modified the base to adapt it to the architecture and transformed the demon .
Our sculpture is an edition from the second part of the 19th century , « Charles More Fondeur » , bearing the numbering « 501 », circa 1890 .
Bronze signed « E.FREMIET », hollow on the terrace .
Sculpture resting on an oval terrace in red marble (slight restoration of a small chip) .
Perfect state of conservation and patina .
